About the Maker

Shane Stewart is a cabinet maker and composite boat builder by trade, who initially served his apprenticeship in ships' joinery in the late 1980's at HMNZ dockyards at Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand.

With a solid background in traditional woodworking and 20 years experience working with composite materials building yacht spars and America’s Cup boats, Shane is making instruments which encompass the old and new techniques of instrument building.

Shane also brings his vast experience as a musician into the design and resulting  tone  of his harps.   He’s played Scottish bagpipes for more than 30 years, and whistle (and has had a go at making parts of both instruments), is a published composer and teacher of pipes,  and has built his own recording studio.  Having developed a good 'ear' for tone through playing bagpipes, whistle and Irish tenor banjo, and recording musical instruments Shane has applied his knowledge and skills in balancing tradition and innovation to design and build harps that are structurally stable and provide a fantastic rich tone.   You can hear the results on the sound files of the Stewart harps – all recorded at Heron Studios.

Shane’s philosophy is that great music starts with a great tone, whether it is with building instruments, doing live sound engineering or recording music.
